Come out to Trinity on March 10th as we celebrate the upcoming Spring season. Weather is finally turning around and our registration numbers for the upcoming season are on pace for an all-time high, we know you all want to get back outside in the sun and enjoy some sports with us.

Trinity will be providing various food and beverage specials all night to us. Come get a free beer stein with your registration (if you’ve already paid, you still can come get a stein)! We’ll be able to process registrations on site, so if you’ve yet to sign up for a Spring sport or our Foxfield event, this is the time to do it!

As usual, we’re doing our bus trip to Foxfield this year. Cost is $79 (we’re barely breaking even, this is not something we do to turn a profit.). We have 3 plots, green section, plots G1, G2, and G3. This gets you a ticket, a seat on the bus to and from Foxfield, and some Wayside chicken. We got there VERY quickly last year and didn’t have to sit in traffic due to the bus lanes that were set up. I think we beat the car we sent by a good 90 minutes.

Tickets go on sale March 4th at 1pm. There are only 47 seats. We expect them to go pretty quickly — the first 47 to sign up AND pay get a seat. If there’s a ton of demand, we can look into getting a second bus, but you should not rely on that.

It’s going to be a blast. Hope you can join us!

Yes, we’re going to actually run a flipcup league. Thursday nights, McGrady’s Irish Pub, 6 on 6 teams. You’ll play 3 matches each night, each match being a best of 7. Beer (or water) will be provided for the matches, there’s no alcohol consumption required in order to play.

Hearing rumors we may get 6-12 inches of snow on Monday. I figured I did something to piss off the kickball gods. I canceled the season already, so the kickball gods can go eat some yellow snow.

Kickball hasn’t been played since early November.. and it’s not changing any time soon. How’s that for foreshadowing?

So, there’s good news, meh news, and bad news.

I’ll start with the good news first, because it’s the shortest part of this blog post.

Good news:
We got Venable on Sundays for Flag Football. That gives us 2 fields.. we can’t start there until about 1:30 though, so expect 1:30pm-5:30pm for a time frame for games. This limits the number of teams we can handle right now to 16 total. So.. get signed up. We should be able to secure a third field if we need it, but nothing is a certainty.

Ultimate Frisbee will be run on Saturdays at Washington Park.

Flip-cup league is still being discussed, and will likely be Thursday nights at McGrady’s. Registration for these will open this weekend.

We will be running a regional flag football tournament at The Park @ UVA on May 15th/May 16th. Cost is still being worked out, but instead of the state tournament where it was single elimination and you had to pay $200, we’re going to guarantee at least 3 games so you get your money’s worth.

Meh news:

According to the new policy on how the County/City will dole out fields, we are at the bottom of the priority list. The very bottom. This doesn’t fall into the bad news category because this is where we were already at to begin with.

Bad news:

Winter kickball is canceled. The city estimates the fields won’t be playable until mid-March, and we’re unable to book any Saturday dates to make up games to boot. Moving the league indoors isn’t going to happen because of:

1) hardly any gym is suitable for the sport, and the one I know that is is taken by wheelchair basketball
2) running a 9 week season now would push the league until late April.. and due to how long it takes to process these applications, potentially longer
3) the cost of running the league indoors is greater by a degree of 500%+

So.. by the 18th refunds will be issued. If you are planning to play in the Spring, which is $1.50 more expensive, you can carry over your winter registration and play for the same amount you had already paid. I’ll be e-mailing each player directly to confirm what they want to do. If I don’t hear from you by the 18th, you’ll be issued a refund.

Believe me, this is the absolute last thing we wanted to do, but the 50+ inches of snow we’ve gotten has pretty much tied my hands. We’re eating a lot of cost here.. from the shirts that have already been printed, sponsors who lined up, advertising, insurance.. it just sucks.

In other bad news.. it doesn’t look like we’re going to be able to obtain fields for our 7 on 7 co-ed soccer league on Saturdays. We have a shot of getting fields for Sunday, which I am pursuing currently. Hopefully that happens, and if so, we’ll stagger it so there’s little to no overlap with kickball.

You may notice that a lot of sports are being run on Sunday. That’s because every organization under the sun has field priority over us, and these are the scraps we are left with. We’d love to run more Saturday sports, or sports during weeknights on lighted fields.. but it’s just not possible currently.

We’re still trying to figure out if we want to continue running Wallyball on Tuesdays in the Spring, switch over to Sand Volleyball, or both. Current and former players can expect an e-mail from me asking for input.

We’re also exploring a co-ed basketball league in the Spring, and I have applications in regarding facility rentals on that that I am waiting to hear back on.

I guess that’s it. A disappointing day. Wish I had better news.

Footballers — for the open league, it looks like we’re going to be joining the VFFL/USFFL. What does this mean? Some rules changes (going to 8 on 8, no delayed rush, full line blocking), and the winners will be eligible for the state tournament. Detailed info will be going out to all players tomorrow. No changes for the co-ed league are currently anticipated.

We’ve reverted back to the old style walls with some facebook integration, not the full integration that we previously had. Long story short, it was simply too buggy. Facebook Connect seems full of promise, but the reality (bugs, bad documentation, inconsistency) is that it’s just not fully ready to rely upon yet.

Goes to show, if you want something done right, do it yourself.
